Challenges, Choices, and Opportunity in a Billion Dollar Industry

Social Equity Zoom Meeting

Cannabis legalization has sparked a billion-dollar industry worldwide. However, people of color have been largely excluded from ownership in the legal cannabis industry. Recently, states with cannabis legalization have granted licensing preferences to people of color and those disproportionately affected by the war on drugs. These new social equity measures present a limited opportunity to progress towards equity, diversity, and inclusion in the cannabis industry significantly.

John Bailey, Founder of the Black Cannabis Equity Initiative (BCEI), and Roz McCarthy, Founder and CEO of Minorities for Medical Marijuana (M4MM) organized a national pre-420 social equity Zoom meeting to accelerate the social equity conversation with cannabis industry leaders. Jim Marty, CEO of Bridge West, joined cannabis business professionals and industry experts for “National Pre-4/20 Social Equity Zoom: Challenges, Choices, and Opportunity in a Billion Dollar Industry.” On April 19, at 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM EST, concerned stakeholders, regulators, industry leaders, and elected officials from around the country gathered to unpack social equity issues and opportunities in the cannabis industry.

Bridge West CEO and Founder, Jim Marty, presented during the event alongside cannabis industry veterans and discussed how we define, hold accountable, and measure social equity. Attendees learned about the increased opportunities that black communities will have over the next 18 months that we’ve never seen before in states with adult-use legalization. Speakers also addressed the next steps that need to happen to accelerate social equity and lift black voices in the cannabis industry.
